5 most important transfers for Oklahoma Sooners in 2025

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the midst of spring ball and working toward a resurgent 2025 season. The Sooners are banking on the additions via the transfer portal making a huge impact.

On offense, Oklahoma added one of the top young offensive coordinators in the country to help revitalize an offense that was one of the worst in the nation in 2024. With offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer leading, there’s a lot of reason for optimism about the Sooners in 2025.

While Mateer was the biggest addition in the transfer portal, he’ll need help from several transfer additions for the Sooners to bounce back in 2025. So who are the most important transfer additions for the Sooners this spring?

1. John Mateer, QB

Okay, this is the obvious one. The Sooners need their offense to be significantly better in 2025 than it was last year and they paid a pretty penny to make sure that’s the case when they brought in John Mateer.

Mateer’s leadership is being lauded by those inside and outside the building. If he can bring a similar playmaking style to OU that he had at Wazzu, Oklahoma’s offense will be back to what’s expected at HeismanU.

2. Derek Simmons, OT

When the Oklahoma Sooners added Derek Simmons, they brought in one of the more highly regarded offensive linemen in the transfer portal. He stood out in nonconference games against NC State and Arkansas each of the last two years and has the experience to be a stabilizing force for a Sooners offensive line that must improve if Oklahoma wants to be a contender.

3. Javonnie Gibson, WR

So far, so good for the Arkansas Pine Bluff transfer as…
