LSU football made a splash when it signed running back Harlem Berry in its 2025 recruiting class. Berry is the rare prospect who is a consensus No. 1 recruit at his position. All four major recruiting services ranked Berry as the top running back in the class.
Rivals was the highest on Berry, slotting him as the No. 14 overall prospect and comparing him to NFL star De’Von Achane.
Berry is LSU’s best running back recruit since the Tigers signed John Emery in 2019. According to 247Sports, the only LSU running backs to rank higher than Berry in the modern recruiting era are Emery and Leonard Fournette.
Fournette was the No. 1 overall recruit in 2014.
Fournette, Emery, and Berry are the only five-star running backs to sign with LSU in the 247Sports era. All three are Louisiana natives.
LSU had a true freshman running back make an impact in 2024 with Caden Durham surpassing 1,000 total yards. Now, Berry joins the fold.
What impact will LSU football’s Harlem Berry make as a true freshman?
In most years, Berry would have a chance to be LSU’s No. 1 back, but LSU might have one of the best running backs in the country with Durham returning. Durham’s 752 rushing yards led all true freshmen in the SEC and his 3.48 yards after contact/per carry ranked top 10 in the conference. Durham was an impact player in the passing game, too.
Berry and Durham’s skill sets are similar. Both are balanced backs that have the power to break tackles and the speed to take one to the house. LSU doesn’t need Berry to serve as a change of pace back, but LSU will get Berry on the field.
Explosiveness is a key element of Berry and Durham’s game. Having two running backs with breakaway potential allows LSU to keep Durham without losing that explosive threat.
