Oregon head coach Dan Lanning talks spring game, quarterbacks and practice facility upgrades following the team’s first spring practice.
Following a historic third season at the helm of the Oregon football program, Dan Lanning is gearing up his Ducks for his fourth spring football practices, which began Thursday in Eugene.
The Ducks will practice Thursday and Friday before spring break and return to town to resume practices in late March.
Lanning spoke with media Thursday morning about various topics, including the spring game format, his quarterback room and the Ducks’ Rose Bowl loss on New Year’s Day.
Dan Lanning says Ducks’ spring game format won’t change
A rising trend across the country has eliminated a once-a-year tradition for many college football programs. Frightened of players being poached or injured during live game reps in front of fans, many coaches have opted to eliminate their yearly spring game or change the format to make it more like an intentionally limited set of drills than a game.
Oregon won’t be following that trend.
“I think it’s the best way for us to get better,” Lanning said of holding a spring game. “We’re absolutely going to have a spring game and play football in the spring game. We just mentioned new faces, I think that’s a great opportunity. Autzen is one of those places where we have a spring game and it’s a gameday environment. So creating that environment for those players and the competition that exists in that and our fans and what they bring to that. I think it’s a huge piece.
“For me, it’s the right way to cap off a spring and as long as I’m here, we’ll be doing spring games.”
Oregon’s spring game will kick off at 1 p.m. April 26 from Autzen Stadium and admission is free. The Ducks will also continue to host their Food For…
