The Georgia Bulldogs only have three healthy scholarship quarterbacks this spring. Georgia four-star quarterback signee Ryan Montgomery is not expected to be available after tearing his ACL and undergoing surgery during the 2024 high school football season.
Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart clarified Montgomery’s status ahead of spring practice. “Then we’ve got Ryan Montgomery, who has the ACL repair,” Smart said when listing nine players that are out for the spring.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback was ranked as the No. 14 player at his position in the class of 2025, per 247Sports. Montgomery is one of four scholarship quarterbacks on the Georgia roster. Smart did not offer any insight into when he will be available to return.
Montgomery’s absence means that projected starter Gunner Stockton and projected back up Ryan Puglisi will get even more reps this spring. It is unclear who Georgia’s third-string quarterback is, but we would give a slight edge to walk-on Collin Drake over three-star freshman signee Hezekiah Millender due to Drake’s experience.
Kirby Smart emphasizes that there’s a competition at quarterback and every other position this spring.
“As far as quarterback, it’s just like every position, guys. I mean, every day you’re competing and fighting and doing the best you can to compete with every guy. I mean, you think it’s redundant or coach speak, but there really isn’t a depth chart. There’s just reps. And in the spring, we’re giving reps out,” said Smart. “And we want to see all those guys compete and get better.”
