How two Beach seniors shined on field and in classroom to earn college football opportunities

Shortly after Chandler Reid walked through the doors of Beach High School as a freshman, head football coach Michael Thompson realized the versatile athlete was something special.

Reid was a four-year starter at point guard for the Bulldogs and became a standout cornerback earning All-Region honors for the last two seasons in that sport as well. On Wednesday, he set his future in motion when he signed to play football at Avila University, an NAIA program in Kansas City, Missouri.

His football teammate, Kobie Goldwire, is also set to play football at the next level as he signed with Bluffton University, a Division III program in Ohio.

“Chandler is definitely a unique athlete,” Thompson said. “You could tell he was different as a freshman and he has been a leader on the field and the court. He came in and changed the culture here. He’s a very quiet kid, but a great leader and he’s an example of what a student athlete should try to be.”

Reid had 12 pass breakups and four interceptions this year for the Bulldogs, who finished 5-5, their first 5-win season since 2017. He is the younger brother of former Groves standout Shabari Davis, who played at SE Missouri State and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2022. His younger sister, sophomore Mariah, is a star on the Beach girls basketball squad.

“Today means a lot to me,” Reid said. “It’s the start of a new journey and I need to keep working hard to get where I want to be. I want to thank my brother, Shabari, he contacted a lot of schools and coaches and helped with my recruiting, while training with me to get better on the field.
