From speedy, slippery running backs and gunslinging quarterbacks to strong, stout linemen and hard-hitting, bruising linebackers, the Big Country’s 2024 Texas high school football season was defined by elite playmakers who delivered when it mattered most.
Several Big Country squads launched deep playoff runs, while many of the area’s top high school football players stood out on the gridiron and left their mark with spectacular individual seasons.
The Abilene Reporter-News recognizes the area’s top players, coaches and teams from the 2024 season with our All-Big Country High School Football Superteam.
Superteam selections were determined through a combination of coach nominations, statistics, all-district honors and team success.
Here’s a complete look at the Big Country and greater Abilene area’s top high school football standouts who earned all-area honors and spots on the Abilene Reporter-News 2024 All-Big Country Football Superteam:
Most Valuable Player: LB/RB Kaston Vega, Stamford, Sr.

Offensive Player of the Year: QB/LB Keagan Ables, Hawley, Sr.
Ables established himself as one of the area’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks during a stellar senior season for the Bearcats. He finished the year as one of the Big Country’s leading passers after throwing for 3,473 yards, 36 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 202-of-320 passing. The Bearcats’ senior signal caller also ran for 661 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns on 114 carries, and caught four passes for 36 receiving yards and a touchdown, too. Ables received District 4-2A DI’s All-District Offensive Player of the Year award after guiding Hawley to the area round of the 2A DI Texas high school football playoffs.
