Ohio State opened spring football practice Monday and coach Ryan Day looked during his press conference as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
Winning a national championship has its benefits.
“Yeah, I’m definitely more relaxed,” Day said with a smile. “To say I’m not is crazy. There’s no question. We’re in a different place than we were a couple of months ago.”
Day said he still pinches himself that the Buckeyes went on the four-game College Football Playoff roll that they did. But now it’s on to the new season with a largely different cast.
Will Howard, Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, TreVeyon Henderson, Cody Simon, Emeka Egbuka and so many others are now awaiting the NFL draft. A new wave of players is ready to take over.
Monday’s practice was not a padded one. The Buckeyes are easing into the spring, so even conjecture about position battles or first impressions at this point is merely that.

Current Ohio State players put championship season in the past
Several panels on the walls of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center practice field are devoted to OSU’s championship run. But Day said the current players do not want to live off the 2024 team’s laurels.
He said he and strength coach Mickey Marotti met with the team’s leadership committee recently and that the players said they wanted fewer tangible reminders around the Woody of the championship.
