Texas A&M’s spring football season officially begins on Thursday, March 20, as the first practice will be held in College Station under second-year head coach Mike Elko, who is looking to take the program’s first steps toward improving after finishing 1-4 after starting 7-1 during his inaugural campaign.
Storylines galore. Mike Elko’s taking over defensive play-calling after Jay Bateman’s struggles last season was highlighted this offseason after Elko brought in former James Madison defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill as a senior assistant who will likely help craft defensive game plans in 2025.
Still, the newcomers from the transfer portal and the 2025 signing class will define Texas A&M’s success heading into the fall. Still, the work starts this month, leading into the Maroon & White spring game for those who need to get acclimated to the program, going from the weight room to the practice field.
So, who are the newcomers set to make the most significant impact this spring?
Tight end Amari Niblack (Transfer Portal)
Amari Black’s journey from Alabama to Texas to Texas A&M is quite the ride. Still, his untapped potential is highly intriguing within OC Collin Klein’s system after recording just five receptions for 33 yards during his only season in Austin. However, Niblack thrived with Crimson Tide in 2023, recording 327 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
Freshman DL Chace Sims
Chace Sims’s rise from an underrecruited prospect to one of the top defensive line prospects in the 2025 recruiting class was enjoyable to watch, and credit to Elko and his defensive staff for seeing his potential early in the process. During his 2024 senior season, Sims produced 96 tackles, 11 sacks, and 28.5 tackles for loss, and could be too skilled to keep off the field among what is relatively thin defensive line rotation.
