For Michigan State football fans who eagerly await each year’s spring showcase, there was some unfortunate news on Tuesday. MSU head coach Jonathan Smith announced that his team won’t be hosting a spring game or showcase this year.
The Spartans aren’t the only team to do this, as it’s becoming a bit of a trend in college football lately. Of course, the spring game hasn’t been what it once was lately, as it’s evolved more into a ‘showcase’ than a true scrimmage anyway.
As far as reasons for the decision go, Smith cited renovations to Spartan Stadium as a key factor. He also said another factor, although not a main one, was to minimize poaching of his players by other programs through the portal after being able to watch their practice.
