Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork is aware Buckeyes fans are unhappy about the Big Ten deal that sometimes has OSU play its football games on the streaming service Peacock.
“There’s some angst around that – the availability of it, how do you sign up for it?” he said to Amy Juravich on WOSU’s “All Sides.”
Angst may be understating it. Frustration has been so great, Ohio lawmaker Sen. Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) introduced Senate Bill 221 in September, seeking to ban public universities from, as he put it, “entering into these horrible streaming exclusivity deals and require that any game being streamed exclusively is free to access by students on campus.”
The bill is still in committee.
But availability is just one complaint.
“I think some of their production can get better,” Bjork continued. “So we’re working on that.”
He recalled that when he was growing up, he watched games on network TV. Some of his neighbors had ESPN, but they needed a satellite dish to tune in to that channel.
That is not the experience for today’s viewers and will not be their experience moving forward.
“Streaming is not going away,” Bjork said. He also pointed out that the Big Ten’s TV arrangement is locked in through the 2030-31 season.
The consolation he offered Ohio State fans is that the Buckeyes appear on Peacock less than some of their Big Ten counterparts.
“I do think the brand of Ohio State is valued differently,” he said.
