As Florida football racked up wins to end 2024, Eugene Wilson III waited on the bench, hungry to return. Now, he’s healthy at spring practice and faster than ever.
A quick scan of Florida football’s roster reveals an obvious fact: the strength of the Gators’ offensive roster comes at the wide receiver position.
There are talented freshmen like Vernell Brown and Dallas Wilson – each of whom are ranked in the top eight among WRs in the Class of 2025. Then there’s also J. Michael Sturdivant, a UCLA transfer who had 600 receiving yards in 2023.
Perhaps the most gifted receiver is the longest-tenured of the bunch – Eugene Wilson III, a redshirt sophomore who spent most of last season hungry to connect with his new quarterback.
Wilson struggled to stay on the field last season and played just four games due to a hip injury. In his brief window, Wilson displayed why he’s such a tantalizing talent, gaining an impressive 266 yards.
More than half –141 – came in the Gators’ blowout win over Samford on September 7. It was one of two starts he made with DJ Lagway at QB. Wilson, in a black non-contact jersey, has fully returned to Florida’s spring practice. He said he’s “juiced” to play with Lagway and added that everything boomed with him last season.
“It was crazy, because the LSU game I wasn’t present, at, I was watching on TV…my last day on crutches,” Wilson said. “That Ole Miss (game), it was jumping, the energy just came through.”

What has always made Wilson stand out is his speed. Problem is, that’s not much of an asset in a wide receiver room with Naeshaun Montgomery and Brown. Wilson, though, believes his hip injury held him back and that he can reach another level with his “game speed.”
