Rutgers football is gearing up for spring practices with a revamped coaching staff and a roster bolstered by transfers.Spring practices will be crucial for Rutgers to build on its offensive progress from last season and develop chemistry on defense.

It’s been about three months since Rutgers football’s appearance in the Rate Bowl in Arizona, and since that time the Scarlet Knights said goodbye to several of their star players and welcomed in a host of transfers while coach Greg Schiano hired new coordinators to lead his team’s defense.

So it’s been a busy few months off the field.

The Scarlet Knights next week will get back to work on the field.

Schiano’s team will open up spring practices on March 28 in Piscataway, the first of 15 sessions that will culminate with the Scarlet Knights’ annual Scarlet-White Game at SHI Stadium on April 26.

Here are five storylines we’ll be watching throughout the spring:

1. The revamped defense, led by co-coordinators Zach Sparber and Robb Smith

This time last year there were few questions about Rutgers’ defense.

There was continuity with the coaching staff. Nearly all of the unit’s impact players who had eligibility remaining had announced their intentions to return for one more year. There weren’t many holes to fill.

Things are a little different this year, to say the least.

Defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak left to become the head coach UMass. To replace him, Schiano has brought in two coordinators in Bergen Catholic grad Zach Sparber and Robb Smith, who was the team’s DC from 2020-21.
