VERMILLION, S.D. — It’s a new era in Vermillion.
Following Bob Nielson’s retirement, former defensive coordinator Travis Johansen enters his first spring practice as the Coyotes’ new head coach. Spring football practice starts on Friday but USD hasn’t announced a date for a potential spring game or finale.
USD enters the spring off its best season in program history, claiming a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference title and reaching the FCS playoff semifinals for the first time.
However, with a new head coach, numerous new assistants, departing seniors and positions to be filled, questions litter this spring practice.
With plenty of storylines to follow as spring opens the door on the 2025 season, here are five to watch closely.
Who fills the slots along the O-line?
The offensive line seemed all but solidified following the season. The Coyotes were set to return four starters along the line, with center Joey Lombard being the only departure. But that changed when former offensive line coach Jeff Nady departed Vermillion for an assistant coaching role at Vanderbilt.
Unfortunately for USD, all-conference right tackle Bryce Henderson followed him, leaving three starters from last year’s squad. However, all three of those starters have proven experience. Joe Cotton will still be at left tackle, Jordan Larson provides a steady presence at left guard and Adrian Hawkins was named to the all-Valley newcomer team with a standout season at right guard.
