Will year three of the Matt Rhule era finally be the year Nebraska takes the next step as a football program? College football analyst Josh Pate took a detailed look at the future of Nebraska football under the Husker head coach. Pate was asked a specific question regarding the Cornhuskers 2025 season.
“Does Nebraska break their ceiling from last year and go at least 8-4?”
The analyst opened his response by reminding people how long it has been since Nebraska has had sustained success.
Once upon a time, this question would have been insulting to Nebraska. Are you aware that last postseason was the first time they practiced for a bowl game in almost a decade? I think it’s safe to assume this is a respectable expectation. It’s Matt Rhule’s track record, and a lot of people are polarized about Matt Rhule. Some people like, and some people can’t stand him.
Pate makes it clear that Rhule’s track record shows that year three is typically his team’s breakthrough season. While at Temple, Rhule went 2-10 in year one, 6-6 in year two, and 10-4 in year three. The same can be said for his tenure at Baylor. In year one, he would finish 1-11; in year two, the Bears would go 7-6; and in year three, he had a record of 11-3.
Go look at what he did at Temple in year three; it’s there. Look at what he did at Baylor in year three; it’s there. That doesn’t guarantee anything and those staff losses are going to be tough to replace…. Dana Holgorsen paired up with Dylan Raiola, the overall output of that team, defense, offense, and special teams. If you roll it all into a ball, we could get a better product on the field this year.
Pate believes that Nebraska’s schedule could significantly influence their year three jump under Matt Rhule.
Look at their schedule. We’ve got it ranked 14th out of 18 teams for strength of schedule in the Big Ten. It’s…
