On the third day of spring practice, Florida State football strapped up and buckled up in full pads on Saturday morning.
After practice, FSU coach Mike Norvell reiterated the intensity and tempo he had seen in the last three practices in four days. However, Norvell’s main focus is the consistency of physicality.
“To be tough, the physicality has to be heard. You don’t just pick and choose when you’re going to be tough,” Norvell said.
“Just kind of show up, good days, bad days, whatever circumstance might be, the physicality that comes from trusting technique, fundamentals, and obviously, all the work that you do in the weight room to be able to put that on this place, not earning that physicality, but developing and building that toughness, and then the consistency has to show.”
FSU fell to 2-10 last season because of a lack of physicality on both ends of the field. While Norvell prioritizes physicality and consistency, he also wants to prepare the players to manage themselves in tough situations.
“We take a coordinated approach to ensure our guys are in the best position,” Norvell said.
“We try to balance each metric of their work and workload. There will be pushes, and there will be some uncomfortable moments when you have to make a choice about what you want to be.”
Defense creating takeaways
Norvell was pleased that the defense had created turnovers against the offense, which was an issue for the Seminoles all last year, as they only produced two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
