LSU football’s spring game will look different this year. It won’t be televised and it will resemble something closer to a practice, rather than a game.
LSU head coach Brian Kelly said there will be live scrimmage action, but it will be controlled and situational. Kelly added there will be a lot more special teams, too.
And while it won’t be on TV, fans have the opportunity to catch the action live at Tiger Stadium. After the event, LSU will host an autograph session for fans.
LSU isn’t the only program adjusting its spring game format. Several major teams across the country are changing the way they wrap up spring, with some axing spring games altogether. When speaking to the media, Kelly alluded to his reasons for making the change.
“We haven’t gotten enough special teams work in those games, and I wanted to include a bigger piece, and so as I looked at the spring practice itself and the game, I think what was more important to me, where we are as a football team, was to get all of our players an opportunity to get reps, and sometimes you don’t get the equal amount of reps in a spring game. We have some young players that need some practice time, and this will give everybody an opportunity,” Kelly said.
Kelly said he doesn’t have to worry about splitting the players up into two teams now, allowing the coaches to better curate the specific matchups they want to see.
Some coaches have expressed concern of spring games leading to tampering as it puts the entire roster on display for the sport to see.
Kelly said he wasn’t worried about that.
“I think if you’re going to lose a player, it’s not because of what they put on film in spring ball, it’s because of what’s happened throughout the entire semester,” Kelly said.
The open practice for fans will take place on April 12 at Tiger Stadium.
