Brandon football has its new head coach.

The school announced it has hired multi-state champion Lance Pogue on Monday. Pogue has also accepted Brandon’s athletic director role.

Pogue, who spent last season as Columbia’s coach, takes over Brandon a few weeks after Sam Williams resigned from the program after four seasons.

“I am honored and excited to join the Brandon High School family,” Pogue said in a press release. “This is a special place with outstanding community support and a deep commitment to excellence. I look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place and taking Bulldog athletics to the next level.”

Pogue is a five-time state champion with South Panola in MHSAA Class 5A and 6A, where he coached from 2007-2016 and had a 126-17 record. He was named USA TODAY National High School Football Coach of the Year in 2010.

The 24-year coaching veteran has had stints at Heritage Academy, Jackson Academy, Eupora and Winona, with a combined 246-71 overall record and a 45-16 playoff record throughout the state. He first head coaching position was at Winona in 1993.

“We are excited to welcome coach Pogue to Brandon,” Brandon principal Bryan Marshall said. “His championship pedigree and strong vision for athletics will elevate our entire program. He’s a leader who understands how to build not only winning teams but also young men and women of integrity.”

Columbia ended the 2024 season 8-4 and lost in the second round of the MHSAA 4A playoffs to eventual state winners Poplarville, 21-20.
