Knight is miles ahead of where Austin thought he would be this early in his college career.
Auburn football kicks off spring practice this week, and one of the many storylines to follow leading into A-Day is the quarterback room.
Payton Thorne has graduated after his two-year stint as the Tigers starting quarterback. At the same time, Hank Brown and Walker White each elected to transfer to Iowa and Baylor, respectively, after the 2024 season. Hugh Freeze was left with a bare cupboard and quickly found two experienced quarterbacks in former five-star Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma and former Stanford starter Ashton Daniels.
In addition to Arnold and Daniels, four-star freshman Deuce Knight has joined the room, which will spark a heavy quarterback competition this spring and beyond. Knight, who is already on campus, is quickly turning heads in camp.
Auburn quarterbacks coach Kent Austin met with the media on Monday to shed light on Auburn’s quarterback room ahead of the spring practice period, which included a brief discussion of Knight. Austin says that he is impressed with Knight’s development ahead of his first collegiate season.
“(Knight) is probably ahead of where we thought he would be, quite frankly,” Austin said Monday. “He’s smart, he prepares, he is really gifted physically. He can make some of throws that a lot of other guys can’t make given at his age.”
It is assumed that Arnold will get the starting nod this season, which will allow Knight time to develop into Auburn’s quarterback of the future. Knight is working his way into the role by building a strong relationship with Arnold, a relationship that Austin believes will improve the quarterback room as a whole.
