Logan George was on his way to dinner with his family in December when he received a phone call from Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson.
“It was unbelievable,” George said.
Johnson wanted to express interest in George, a sophomore at Idaho State who had just entered the transfer portal.
At first blush, George did not appear to be a typical target for the Buckeyes. In the transfer portal era, they had never signed a scholarship player from the smaller Football Championship Subdivision.
But George’s breakout in 2024 put him on the radar of some of the biggest blue bloods, including Ohio State.
It helped that the Buckeyes’ staff had maintained connections to his hometown in southeastern Idaho, stemming from the recruitment of former defensive tackle Tommy Togiai who had also grown up in Pocatello.
“We at least knew some people to ask some questions about his background,” coach Ryan Day said, “and then watched his film.”
Within a week of George entering the portal, he had signed with Ohio State, an addition who could slide into the defensive end rotation.
A third of the way through spring practice, George has made an impression on Johnson.
“He’s been a pleasant surprise,” Johnson said. “He’s quicker than I thought he was. He’s got power. He’s got really strong hands to get off blocks and set the edge. I’m really excited about what we’re going to do with him.”
The track record of Johnson, the Buckeyes’ longest-tenured position coach, ultimately swayed George to move nearly 2,000 miles for his final two years of collegiate eligibility.
“He told me he could develop me,” George said, “and I firmly believe that he could that.”
George also appreciated the alignment of Ohio State’s defense, which has long leaned on playing with four down linemen.
