USC football begins a distinctly new chapter in its story

USC football is trying to turn the page in 2025 after making long-overdue changes

On Tuesday, USC football began its spring 2025 spring practice. Rob Ryan and other new assistant coaches are joining head coach Lincoln Riley in the lead-up to a pivotal season for the program.

Although it feels like just yesterday that USC made massive headlines by hiring Riley away from Oklahoma, he is now entering his fourth season with the Trojans. After going just 14-11 over the past two years, the 2025 campaign feels like a massive one for Riley and USC.

During the offseason, Riley significantly revamped USC’s coaching and recruiting staff. In addition to bringing on Ryan and several other new assistant coaches, USC made several major additions to its recruiting department, headlined by hiring general manager Chad Bowden away from Notre Dame.

Led by Bowden, USC has made a major surge on the recruiting trail, currently holding the No. 1 class in the country for the 2026 cycle. However, those players will not be there to help the Trojans in 2025. If USC wants to keep the class together, winning on the field this season will be crucial.

A critical element in improving the Trojans’ record this year will be the quarterback position. After Miller Moss—who started the majority of the 2024 season for USC—transferred to Louisville, the Trojans’ QB room in 2025 will consist of Jayden Maiava, Sam Huard, and Husan Longstreet.

Maiava started the final four games of 2024, struggling with turnovers at times, but showing signs of potential. Huard, the nephew of USC quarterbacks coach Luke Huard, transferred in from Utah this offseason after prior stops at Washington and Cal Poly. Longstreet is a true freshman early enrollee who signed the Trojans as a five-star recruit out of Corona Centennial High School in Corona, California.
