AUBURN — For a span of the offseason, Auburn football’s quarterback room was in disarray. Payton Thorne was done, without any further eligibility. Then, Holden Geriner entered the transfer portal. Hank Brown soon followed.
The room “emptied out,” as quarterbacks coach Kent Austin described it Monday. It required thorough evaluations of all the passers in the transfer portal, he said.
“The most important thing, from a football standpoint, is the fit for the offense and what level of experience he has, for somebody to come in and compete for the starting job,” Austin said.
That led him, Hugh Freeze and the rest of the program to former five-star recruit and Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold. Spring practice began days ago, but in the months since Arnold’s arrival, both Freeze and Austin have seen a good bit from the new quarterback.
“Jackson is, he’s really bright,” Austin said. “He’s got a really quick arm, he’s really accurate. He gets the ball out of his hand, he’s calm in the pocket, he can run. He’s got quick feet and decent linear speed. He was, I thought, the best fit, we thought, the best fit, for our offense and what we’re going to do going forward offensively.”
Arnold spent two seasons with the Sooners, playing in 17 games. He completed 62.5% of his passes, threw for 1,984 yards and tossed 16 touchdowns to just six interceptions.
