Not only was this past season a memorable one for the Ohio State football team and fans, it was a long one. The longest one in history, in fact after the Buckeyes went on a four-game run against top ten teams Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame to take home the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff national championship.
Being that the season was such a long and winding one, head coach Ryan Day said that this year’s spring football would culminate with a “spring showcase,” rather than the traditional Spring Game fans have been accustomed to. The news was met some disappointment, but those that know how taxing this game can be on the body and mind understood the pivot from years past.
It now appears that there has been a change of heart from the program and Day though, because when speaking to the media last week, he confirmed that it is the program’s intention to try and put on a full-out spring game per usual, but with a couple of caveats.
“My plan is to have a spring game. I just think we need to save a little bit of wiggle room in case we take injuries. That’s it,” Day said. “So we want to do this. We want to play a spring game. Now, there may be some guys that are held from the spring game, but not many. We’re 159 days away from playing Texas, and that day will matter to a lot of young players. So we need to get out there and compete. The format of it and how it works will probably be similar to what we’ve done in the past. So it’ll be a great opportunity for fans and folks to see our guys and get out there and play.”
This is great news for certain fans and families that can’t really afford to go to a regular-season game inside Ohio Stadium. It’s an opportunity to get inside the venerable “Horseshoe” in as close to a game-like schedule as you can. Day did leave some wiggle room to change the…
