David Yost saw the writing on the wall.
Florida International had just fired Mike MacIntyre as its head coach and replaced him with Willie Simmons, an offensive-minded coach from Duke. Yost, the Panthers’ then-offensive coordinator, figured Simmons wouldn’t retain him, and he was proven right 10 days after Simmons’ hiring on Dec. 7.
Shortly after, he received a call from New Mexico State coach Tony Sanchez. He wanted him as his offensive coordinator.
Yost set up a visit to NM State, where Sanchez told him about his vision and how Yost would fit with his players. After conversations with coaching friends and his family, he took the offer.
“I started looking around, talking to people, and had talked to quite a few people about different things,” Yost said. “It was still in December when Coach Sanchez called and said, ‘Hey, would you be interested in the offensive coordinator job here?’ I said, ‘Yeah, definitely.'”
The Aggies needed a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after firing Tyler Wright last October, two weeks after the Las Cruces Sun-News reported on the nature of the over 150 racist, sexist and homophobic posts on his X account. Former offensive line coach and run game coordinator Andrew Mitchell served as the interim play-caller before taking Oklahoma State’s offensive line coaching job last December.
NM State provides a fresh start for Yost, who has coached since 1988 and was previously an offensive coordinator at five different schools — Division II Tiffin, Missouri, Utah State, Texas Tech and FIU. Yost feels his offenses differed at each one and knows exactly what his Aggies offense will be like.
