Swinney on returning wide receiver Tyler Brown’s spring performance

Tyler Brown has caught Dabo Swinney’s attention this spring, and in the best way possible. Clemson’s head coach called Brown the receiver he is “most proud of” following Wednesday’s scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

After a breakout freshman season in 2023, Brown’s sophomore year was cut short by an ankle injury that required surgery. He played in just four regular season games and two postseason contests in 2024, preserving a redshirt. Now fully healthy, Brown has been a standout during spring practice.

“The guy that I’m probably most proud of is Tyler Brown,” Swinney said. “It’s been great to see him have the type of spring that he’s had.”

Brown was injured in Clemson’s second game last season against Appalachian State and didn’t return until the ACC Championship Game against SMU. He played limited snaps in the postseason, including a brief appearance in the College Football Playoff loss to Texas. Over six games, he caught five passes for 30 yards.

This spring, however, Brown has looked like his old self. Swinney pointed to a “pretty special” performance in Monday’s practice, where Brown made multiple big-time plays in competitive situations.

“His confidence is really getting back where it was,” Swinney said. “But he’s just got a lot of experience now, and much more maturity to go with it.”

A former standout at Greenville High School, Brown emerged as a key playmaker in 2023, leading Clemson in receptions (52) and receiving yards (531) while hauling in four touchdowns. He became just the fifth Clemson freshman since 2010 to record 50 catches in a season, joining the likes of Antonio Williams, Artavis Scott, Sammy Watkins, and DeAndre Hopkins.

Now back to full strength, Brown appears poised to reclaim a major role in Clemson’s offense heading into the 2025 season.
