Cumberland has added a new season opener at NCAA Division I FCS opponent Tennessee Tech on Aug. 30 to kick off the 2025 season.
This will be the 15th recorded meeting between the two programs and the first since 2013, when the Golden Eagles secured a 63-7 victory in Cookeville. Tennessee Tech holds a 7-6-1 all-time record over Cumberland with 12 of the meetings dating back before the 1950s. Since the CU football program restarted in 1990, Cumberland and Tennessee Tech met in 2007 and ’13. The latter game saw 12,381 fans in attendance at Tucker Stadium to start the season. Both of those games were played on Thursday, a typical home-opening night for Tech and many college football teams, but this year’s game will be played on Saturday afternoon.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our program to compete against Tennessee Tech,” said Cumberland coach Tim Mathis. “Facing an FCS opponent from the OVC will be a tough challenge for our team, but it’s a great chance for our young men to showcase their talent. We need all of our Phoenix fans to come out and support us. It will be a great game for college football fans in Middle Tennessee.”
Cumberland is coming off a strong 2024 campaign, finishing with a 7-3 record, including a 3-3 mark in Mid-South Conference play. The seven-win season was the program’s best since 2017. Under the leadership of seventh-year coach Mathis, who was named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, the Phoenix climbed as high as No. 22 in the national rankings and were either ranked or receiving votes in four different polls—their first top 25 appearance since 2018.
