Stuart Cramer football has found its next head man.
Ashton Simmons was announced as the Storm’s new football coach Friday via social media.
“Storm Nation, I am excited to be named the next head football coach at Stuart W. Cramer High School,” Simmons said. “I am ready to begin this new chapter in life with you.”
He takes over for Ben McMillan, who served as Stuart Cramer head man for the school’s first 11 seasons. He finished with a 44-75 record.
A graduate of Appalachian State, Simmons most recently served as wide receivers coach at Mount Airy High, helping the Granite Bears to a 13-1 record. He also served a bevy of other roles in previous stops at Starmount and North Surry high schools.
Among the things which made Simmons an attractive coaching prospect was “his commitment to program development, including game-planning, skill development, film analysis and community outreach,” according to a prepared statement by the school.
“We are excited to welcome Coach Simmons to ‘The Storm’ to lead our football program into the future,” said Stuart Cramer athletic director Mike Patton. “Coach Simmons has worked with several well-respected head football coaches in winning programs, including Kelly Holder, J.K. Adkins, and Greg Lloyd. We look forward to working with Coach Simmons as he takes the helm of our football program.”
Simmons is expected to meet players, assistant coaches and football help staff within the next few weeks. He hopes to provide a boost for a Cramer program which has finished with a losing record five of the past six seasons.
