Can the Tar Heels add a wide receiver to their 2026 recruiting class?
The UNC football team is just over five months away from officially kicking off the Bill Belichick era, when TCU comes to Kenan Stadium on Monday, September 1 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff under the lights.
North Carolina already has its 2025 recruiting class locked down, highlighted by 4-star quarterback Bryce Baker. The Tar Heels are also faring pretty well in the transfer portal, with 4-star cornerback Thaddeus Dixon their top get.
While all the focus on UNC surrounds its upcoming season, 2026 looks promising early on the recruiting board. North Carolina already has eight commitments, with in-state, 4-star defensive lineman Trashawn Ruffin leading the way.
The Tar Heels could be adding another key piece to their 2026 recruiting class soon, with that recruit coming from football royalty.
Devin Fitzgerald, a 3-star wide receiver who plays his high school ball at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, Ariz, will visit Chapel Hill on Saturday, March 29.
Name sound familiar? Devin is the son of 11-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who also twice led the NFL in receptions and receiving touchdowns. Larry, a future Hall-of-Famer, is one of the best professional football players to never win a Super Bowl.
According to UNC football general manager Michael Lombardi, March 29 will be one of the program’s nine spring practices this month. I bet Devin will watch a lot of practice from close up on the sidelines, but I’m hoping he’ll get some time to showcase his skills on the field.
If North Carolina plays its cards right, its weekend will end with one extra Class of 2026 commitment. Imagine the recruits that could follow Devin to Chapel Hill, based on even his last name alone
