Lincoln Riley talks about Husan Longstreet’s learning curve at USC

All eyes are on Husan Longstreet at USC

This week, USC officially kicks off its 2025 spring practice. One of the key storylines this spring for the Trojans will be the quarterback competition.

Redshirt junior Jayden Maiava—who started the final four games of 2024 for USC—enters the spring as the presumptive starter. However, he will be pushed be Husan Longstreet, the class of 2025 five-star signee who enrolled early and is participating in spring ball with the Trojans.

Following USC’s first spring practice on Tuesday, head coach Lincoln Riley discussed Longstreet’s early development.

“Husan is further ahead than most freshmen at his time,” Riley said. “The advantage of being able to come in for a little of the bowl practice, to be in some of those meetings, to set up to where this wasn’t his first college practice was pretty cool.

“And he did a great job taking advantage of being a local guy and he was here as much as the rules allowed. He came to a lot [of] meetings, came to a lot of practices on his own time, on his own dime, and it’s paid off because he’s way further ahead than most guys would be at this age. His ability to communicate and manage the group right now as a young guy is pretty impressive.”

Maiava is definitely still the favorite to win the starting job. If Longstreet has a strong spring, however, he could potentially insert himself into the competition.

Even if Longstreet does not start this season, however, it seems as though USC has a lot to be optimistic about for the future with him in the program.
