Notre Dame TE Kevin Bauman reflects on ‘surreal’ Sugar Bowl moment

SOUTH BEND — Kevin Bauman, back for a sixth year at tight end for Notre Dame football, is still amazed by Jayden Harrison’s 98-yard kickoff return in the Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.

While Harrison was timed at 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Thursday’s Pro Day, Bauman on Friday was reminded he somehow ran stride for stride with the speedy receiver for the final 60 yards of the game-turning touchdown.

“Oh, man, I couldn’t breathe for a good couple minutes after that one,” Bauman said. “Talk about a season-defining play. Something like that, it’s one of those surreal moments.”

Bauman, whose star-crossed career has included a pair of ACL tears and a fractured fibula, all in his left leg, caught a touchdown pass at Purdue last September. He saw just three plays on kickoff return until moving onto the unit for the final three games of the College Football Playoff, starting with the Sugar Bowl.

“You think of the events leading up to that game down in New Orleans,” Bauman said. “A terrible tragedy (on Bourbon Street). Game getting postponed and everything. And you come out and win a game like that, score on a (kickoff return). It’s special. I don’t even know what else to say. What a cool moment that was.”

Another classic experience awaits Bauman and younger brother Alex in the 2025 season opener at Miami. Alex Bauman landed with the Hurricanes as a graduate transfer after making 63 catches for 610 yards and 13 touchdowns in three seasons at Tulane.

“We do talk about it pretty often,” Kevin Bauman said. “I was just on spring break with him, so we were talking a lot of stuff. It’s just cool. My family is pretty excited. He’s obviously very excited just getting down there.”
