How Cincinnati Bearcats football found 6-foot-5 receiver Jeff Caldwell
When you’re a 5-foot-8 high school junior playing soccer and dabbling in football, recruiting texts typically aren’t forthcoming from major colleges. Even when Jeff Caldwell suddenly sprouted nine inches to 6-foot-5 as a senior, he had no rating by any recruiting services and one offer.
Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri won Caldwell’s services. The Lions are an FCS program some four hours and change from Caldwell’s Louisville home. After 93 career catches and 23 touchdowns at Lindenwood in three seasons, Caldwell with his lanky frame and speed, started getting noticed by college general managers and recruiting types.
He had talks with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa and contact from other Big 12 and SEC institutions. But, Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby pulled a social media end-around that wound up getting Caldwell in a Bearcats jersey.

“He slid into my DMs (X/Twitter direct messages), honestly,” Caldwell said. “He’s a guy who is real team-oriented as a leader. You need that connection with quarterback and receiver. We’ve established that and it’s going to continue to grow. I expect big things.”
Caldwell has impressed since the jump, which horizontally has been measured at a freakish 11’9″. He’s been timed at running over 22 miles per hour and is in the 4.4-second neighborhood in the 40-yard dash. Catch-wise, he’s caught most and made enough last year (53) to be named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award which goes to the top offensive player among Football Championship Series (FCS) institutions.
