After Week 7 of the college baseball season, the SEC has continued to divide itself into tiers. Four teams are 8-1 and another is 7-2, while four teams are 1-8 and another is 0-7. The middle tier, meanwhile, is standing on solid ground as the other 11 teams all have at least four conference wins.
Though the SEC is still the strongest conference in college baseball, it seems unlikely at this point to top last year’s 11 teams in the NCAA tournament or approach the 14 teams that received a bid in men’s basketball.
Marquee series for Week 8 include Georgia at Texas, LSU at Oklahoma and Alabama at Auburn.
1. Tennessee
Record: 26-2 (8-1 SEC)
Last week: 1
Tennessee is no longer putting up quite the gaudy numbers it did early in the non-conference schedule, but the Vols still have taken care of business led by the top pitching staff in the country.
2. Arkansas
Record: 26-3 (8-1)
Last week: 2
Arkansas is one of the most well-balanced teams in the SEC with a strong pitching staff and a powerful offense but the Razorbacks are just a step short of elite in both areas.
3. Texas
Record: 21-3 (8-1)
Last week: 3
The Longhorns have just kept winning, putting up an emphatic sweep of Missouri on the road this past week before a marquee home series against Georgia.
4. Georgia
Record: 28-2 (8-1)
Last week: 4
Georgia has the most productive offense in the country, which mostly makes up for a pitching staff that has shown improvement in recent weeks but is still in the bottom half of the SEC.
5. LSU
Record: 26-3 (7-2)
Last week: 5
LSU is a solid, well-rounded team without a lot of weaknesses, but the Tigers’ ceiling doesn’t seem as high as the teams ahead of them.
6. Alabama
