Austin High School football coach Eric Pichardo has been nominated for the 2025 Tom Landry Award, an annual award given out by the Texas High School Coaches Association.
He is one of eight statewide nominees for the award, which is presented annually at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame banquet in May in Waco.
Selected by the THSCA Board of Directors, the Tom Landry Award recipient must be a member in good standing of THSCA and should have made significant contribution to the athletes and the game of football in Texas. The candidate should have served as a positive role-model for both athletes and coaches alike.
Since the award was established in 1990, no El Paso coach has won the award.
“It’s truly and an honor to be nominated,” said Pichardo, who has been a football coach for 28 years, the past eight at Austin where he has won three district titles. “This is for all the coaches in El Paso. It would be amazing to win this award for our community. Coaching has given me so much.”
David Cervantes, who is the director of athletics for the El Paso Independent School District, which Austin High School is a member of, said Pichardo is a perfect nominee for the award.
“Coach Pichardo symbolizes what the award is about. He has impacted many lives and has shown great support to many,” Cervantes said. “He has a great amount of respect in our city and he was an unanimous pick within the coaching community here to be nominated for the award.”
