Ohio State football keeping traditional spring game

Ohio State is keeping a traditional spring football game.

The school announced Wednesday that it is no longer branding the event on April 12 as a spring showcase.

“We heard you, Buckeye Nation,” the announcement read. “The name ‘Spring Showcase’ didn’t capture what this day really means. So we’re calling it what it’s always been.”

The spring game will include game-style reps, but no other details on the format were released.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has stressed a desire to hold an intrasquad scrimmage to end spring practice, but said last week that he was trying “to save a little wiggle room in case we take injuries.”

Day has been conscious about the health of the Buckeyes, who played a school record 16 games last season as a result of the expanded College Football Playoff.

The postseason run led them to delay the start of spring practice by two weeks.

The spring game will be held at Ohio Stadium. It drew just over 80,000 fans last year, making up the largest crowd since 2017.
