Oregon Ducks Dan Lanning ranked as one of Greg McElroy’s top coaches

One of the most polarizing topics of conversation that takes place each and every offseason is a ranking of the best coaches in college football, and how individuals have jockeyed for position over the previous several months.

While major media members put out their lists and rankings to be directed, fans devour the information and are quick to argue about who is ranked to high, and who is far too low. This past week, ESPN’s Greg McElroy put out his list of the top 10 coaches in the nation going into the 2025 college football season, and fans of the Oregon Ducks have to feel pretty good about it.

According to McElroy, Oregon’s Dan Lanning ranks as the No. 5 coach in the nation, according to McElroy. Lanning is just behind Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, and just ahead of Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer. Leading the way is Georgia’s Kirby Smart, followed by Ohio State’s Ryan Day, and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian.

It is no surprise that Smart is leading the list, seeing as he has a pair of national championship victories in the past five years. Behind him, Day’s first national championship in 2025 with the Buckeyes certainly propelled him up the list. You could argue that Freeman might deserve a spot over Sarkisian, seeing as Notre Dame made it to the championship this year, but those two feel like they are in the right tier.

Lanning’s spot ahead of DeBoer, Dabo Swinney, Jeff Brohm, Brian Kelly, and James Franklin feels appropriate. In his three years at Oregon, Lanning has gone 35-6 with a Big Ten Championship and a No. 1 seed in the 2025 College Football Playoff.

Of course, if Lanning wants to continue to move up the list, he will need to start getting some postseason wins on his resume, of which he has none at this point. The 2025 season will offer another opportunity to prove that he is among the best coaches in the game.
