Greetings from “Can’t Wait For Saturday,” your morning morsel of college football, courtesy of longtime Illini beat writer, AP Top 25 voter and Heisman state rep Bob Asmussen. He’ll give you his views each day on the game he loves.

Colorado athletic director Rick George took a chance a few years back and hired Deion Sanders to coach in the Power Four. Though Sanders has his critics, the move was brilliant.
Sanders instantly put the Buffs back on the college football map. It been a long time since Colorado had been relevant. It is now.
The first season started with bang and ended with a fizzle. But in the second season, Sanders put Colorado in a bowl and saw his star player Travis Hunter win the Heisman Trophy.
During and after the season, there was speculation Sanders might move on, either to the NFL or another college program.
Doesn’t look like it will happen now.
The school just announced a five-year contact extension Sanders that will pay a reported $54 million and keep him in Boulder through the 2029 season. He will earn $10 million this season with raises after that taking the number to $12 million in 2029.
George and Colorado protected their interests with a huge buyout. If Sanders wants to leave in 2025 it will cost him $12 million,
The number drops in the following years, but the numbers are hefty enough that you have to assume Sanders will stay put.
I will not be one of those making fun of Colorado for paying the coach too much money. There is no such thing. What he has done for the program so far has been worth every penny. How do I know? Because it is April and I am writing about Colorado football.
Is Sanders a great coach?…
