Father Lopez head football coach Matt Nasser stepped down for health reasons but will remain with the team in a new role.Offensive coordinator Mark Gabbard, who joined Father Lopez last year, will take over as head coach.

Head coach Matt Nasser stepped down, and offensive coordinator Mark Gabbard will assume the top chair, athletic director Brad Ridenour told the News-Journal Wednesday.
Nasser made the decision in order to deal with ongoing health challenges. He will remain on staff in a newly created position: director of player development. During his two years in charge of his alma mater, the Green Wave went 2-17.
Gabbard moved to the area and joined Nasser’s staff last season.
“To Matt’s credit, he had the courage to say, ‘Hey, man, I need you to take this baton and run with it right now,’” Gabbard said. “He made that decision and passed on the baton, and again, just courage on his part to be able to say this is what’s best for the kids, this is what’s best for the coaching staff and the program with the foundation we were able to establish.”

Gabbard, 48, has a long history as a coach. He started with baseball after suiting up for Azusa Pacific University, earning his first head-coaching job at Western Christian High School in Upland, California….
