Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule assesses running back room

Rhule: “I have no concerns about running back.”

We know about Emmett Johnson. But behind him?

Massive spring for Kwinten Ives. Rhule said Mekhi Nelson is “dynamically fast” and will be in the mix.

Rhule said Jamarion Parker, who came to NU at 175 pounds, is up to 190 pounds.

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule spoke with the media last week. He gave an update on the status of the running back room, in what is going to be an intriguing position battle to watch over the spring.

The Huskers have several options at the running back position, starting with Emmett Johnson. Johnson recorded 117 carries for 598 yards and one touchdown. He also added an element from the passing game, recording 39 receptions. That was the largest number by a Husker running back since 2007.

Kwinten Ives and Mehki Nelson also figure to be part of the equation. Ives appeared in nine games, recording six carries for seven yards. He scored his first collegiate touchdown against Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl in December. Nelson played in one game, which was the season-opener against UTEP.

Jamarion Parker adds a bit of mystery as the freshman looks to make an impact early. He was a decorated high school running back who recorded 168 carries for 1,730 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior last season.

As transcribed by Rivals.com’s Steve Marik, Rhule seemed encouraged by the room overall. The running back position will be one to watch over the course of spring practices. It could end up being a position of depth and skill, as the program looks for consistency and continuity at the position.
