Purdue quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw breaks down position battle
Who will be Purdue’s starting QB? Darin Hinshaw addresses that and how the position has progressed through the spring.
Malachi Singleton, a transfer quarterback from Arkansas, joined Purdue with the goal of becoming the starting quarterback.Singleton has impressed coaches during spring practices and is competing with three other quarterbacks for the starting position.Purdue’s offensive coordinator, Josh Henson, has praised Singleton’s ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt to the team’s offensive system.
WEST LAFAYETTE — Malachi Singleton doesn’t sugarcoat his intentions with Purdue football.
The former Arkansas quarterback joined the Boilermakers “to have the opportunity to be the guy on the team.”
Singleton, who led Arkansas on a game-winning drive to upset Tennessee last season, was the first player Purdue lured from the transfer portal after its coaching change.
Not long after, the Boilermakers added EJ Colson from UCF, who followed his offensive coordinator after Darin Hinshaw was named Purdue’s quarterbacks coach. Washington State transfer Evans Chuba added to Purdue’s QB depth.
Those three and returnee Bennett Meredith have cycled through No. 1 quarterback reps this spring, each taking turns standing out.
Though Purdue has no intention of naming a starter until the fall, Singleton has caught the eyes of coaches.
“I’m very impressed with Malachi where he started day one and where he is right now,” Hinshaw said. “It’s like a different kid. That’s what I wanted to see.”
Hinshaw once launched touchdown passes to Singleton’s uncle, Mark Whittemore, in the early 1990s at UCF.
Now he’s mentoring Singleton, who was 21 of 28 for 354 yards passing last season…
