Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman isn’t ready to name starting QB

The Fighting Irish have multiple players vying for the 2025 starting quarterback job, and no one has grabbed the reins yet.

Freeman: As soon as there’s a clear starter at QB, we’ll name a starter. I don’t know when that will be.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is in no rush to name next year’s starting quarterback.

The Fighting Irish coach said that when there’s a clear starter, the team will name one, and he’s not sure when that will be.

That could interpreted in both good ways and bad by Notre Dame fans. The positive interpretation is that the potential starting QBs — Steve Angeli, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey are considered the top contenders, though Anthony Rezac and Blake Hebert can’t be ruled out — are all playing equally well and forcing the coaches to make a tough choice. The negative interpretation is that the quarterbacks are all struggling and none have stood out as a potential starter.

Of course, there’s a difference between fans’ worries and hopes and what’s actually happening on the practice field, and we’d also note that Angeli has game experience and has looked good during some of his appearances. He’s a veteran, so that may give him a leg up.

The point is, though, that no one has yet given Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and other coaches the sign that they’re the clear number one. And the coaching staff seems ready to let things play out organically rather than forcing the issue.
