Dabo Swinney on Clemson in the transfer portal after the Spring Game

Clemson capped off spring practice with a productive showing in the Orange and White Game, and for now, Dabo Swinney doesn’t see the need to go hunting in the transfer portal when it reopens on April 16.

“We do not need anybody right now. We feel good about where we are,” Swinney said Saturday. “But that is why I am sitting here today. Ask me next week.”

After a month of practices and a promising spring game performance, Clemson’s coaching staff appears confident in the makeup of the roster—including several of its newest additions. Wide receiver Tristan Smith, a transfer from Southeast Missouri State, turned heads with a 72-yard touchdown and 137 receiving yards in his first appearance in Death Valley. Alabama transfer linebacker Jeremiah Alexander also made a big impact with a team-high seven tackles.

With those performances and continued development from returning players, Swinney said he doesn’t anticipate any urgent needs. “If everything stays the same today, we feel good about our roster,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do, but we are ready to go to battle with the guys we got and let’s go compete. We like our guys.” Still, he acknowledged how unpredictable the portal can be. “Who knows. Those are just things you have to respond to.”

There’s also a looming change ahead with the NCAA’s new 105-player roster cap, which eliminates traditional walk-ons. “We already got to cut some guys,” Swinney said. “We have some walk-ons, and they will not be able to come back. So, if everybody stays, I will have to cut some more. That is if we try to go get some guys without other guys leaving.”

As has been the case in recent years, Clemson is hoping its strong culture will help minimize post-spring departures. “We have been really good with retention, and I would expect that to stay…
