Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph says there should be buyouts when players transfer up to bigger programs:
“There needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go G5 or P4, I should get compensation for that.”pic.twitter.com/UrAWGDNza1

A former Nebraska football player and coach believes that teams should be compensated when a player transfers to a bigger school. Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph recently spoke with the media and made it clear that Group of Five schools should receive a buyout when a player leaves for a Power Five program.
“We shouldn’t get mad as coaches when these kids make decisions to take care of their families. As I’ve been saying, coaches have been doing it for years. I think there needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go to a Group of Five or a Power Five, I should get kind of a compensation for that. NCAA, if you’re listening to me, I need a buyout.”
Joseph played quarterback at Nebraska from 1988 to 1991 before beginning his college coaching career at Tulane as a graduate assistant. He returned to Nebraska as a coach for the 2022 season.
The former quarterback became the interim head coach in 2022 after Scott Frost was fired following a 1-2 start. Joseph finished his nine-game run in charge of Nebraska with a record of 3-6.
A buyout plan may be on the horizon for college football. Changes are coming to player compensation and the transfer portal, and Joesph’s idea could be under consideration for the future.
Joseph is entering his second season at Grambling State. He finished the 2024 campaign with a 5-6 record and a 2-5 mark in the SWAC.
