Where competition stands in spring football

Ohio State has entered its final week of spring practice with the most important position battle far from a resolution.

The Buckeyes’ quarterback competition remains too close to call between redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz, coach Ryan Day said Monday.

“Lincoln and Julian are pretty much neck and neck right now,” Day said.

Ohio State had its student appreciation practice Saturday, which was open to reporters. Kienholz had the better day. Right after Sayin was intercepted when he threw off his back foot under pressure, Kienholz delivered a perfect deep ball to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to Carnell Tate.

“You saw his potential on some of the throws that he made,” Day said. “You saw his athleticism show.”

Sayin also had his moments, showing accuracy and a quick release.

“I met with the quarterbacks and made the comment that the only thing different about Saturday’s practice was that we had students there and we had the media there,” Day said. “Other than that, it was just another practice.

“But what it does make you realize is how important every rep is. That’s my job and (quarterbacks coach) Billy Fessler’s and (offensive coordinator) Brian Hartline’s job – to make sure you understand every single play matters and we’ve got to get better every day.”

Day has been through this before and has always been careful not to tip his hand. He didn’t name Justin Fields, Kyle McCord or even Will Howard the starter until well into training camp in August. With the transfer portal opening next Wednesday, it makes no sense for Day to declare a clear front-runner.

But Day did say…
