Weiss offensive lineman Jerald “JJ” Mays announced Tuesday that he’s committing to Texas Tech. One of the top lineman in the 2026 class, Mays chose Texas Tech over SMU, Ole Miss and Oregon.
A three-star prospect according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, Mays is the 102nd-ranked prospect in Texas and the 62nd-ranked interior offensive lineman. The rising senior told the Austin American-Statesman that he decided to join the Red Raiders primarily because of his love for the coaching staff.
“I feel like we can dominate the Big 12,” Mays said.
Though he’s played all along the line in his varsity career, Mays said at the Elite 11 Regional in March that he’s focusing on center for the upcoming 2025-26 season. He earned MVP recognition at the camp for his performance against some of the best defensive linemen in Texas.
The University Interscholastic League ruled last week that three Weiss players who transferred this past year are ineligible to play, deeming their movements motivated by athletics. Regardless, the Wolves return plenty of talented players, including seven starters on offense and six on defense, from a team that went 8-3 in the 2024-25 season.
Rising sophomore quarterback Jaxon Schad will look to take a leap after throwing 32 touchdowns as a freshman. He’s aided by rising junior four-star receiver Tre Moore, who is currently fielding offers from 22 Division I schools.
