CORAL GABLES — Earlier this year, there was hope new Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck would be ready to return from offseason elbow surgery and participate in some spring practices.
UM coach Mario Cristobal has ruled that out.
“He won’t throw in the spring game,” Cristobal said. Miami’s spring game is slated for Saturday, concluding their stretch of spring practices.
Beck has been progressing ahead of pace, Cristobal said, but he has been limited to handing the ball off and taking mental reps to prepare him to lead Shannon Dawson’s offense.
“He’s taken part, not only walk-throughs but in team-setting drills that allow him to hand the ball off,” Cristobal said. “He goes through every progression, stays up there and watches, relentlessly watches film.”
Cristobal said Beck has progressed to throwing and using his elbow in rehab, but he is not ready to throw in a practice yet.
“I know he’s throwing some other things; he’s throwing the rehab part of the contraptions,” Cristobal said. “It’s right there. We feel great about it.”
Beck has big shoes to fill as he aims to replace Heisman Trophy finalist and likely top draft pick Cam Ward. Ward helped lead UM to a 10-3 record and set program single-season records in passing yards and passing touchdowns.
Beck was a two-year starter for Georgia, which has been one of the best programs in the nation under coach Kirby Smart.
In 2023, Beck had 3,941 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. Georgia went 13-1 and only missed the College Football Playoff because they lost to Alabama in the SEC title game. Last year, he struggled at times but still threw for 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
