Taven Epps commits to Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns have secured their first commitment in the 2027 recruiting class this offseason. According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, four-star linebacker Taven Epps has committed to Texas. This is a major win for the Longhorns, who were facing competition from some of the top programs in the country. That list includes Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Oregon, and Georgia.
Epps began his high school career as a safety before moving to linebacker. He will reportedly get the chance to develop into an edge rusher. The newest Longhorn is ranked as the 68th best player in the country by 247Sports, as well as the No. 3 linebacker overall and the No. 7 overall player in the state of California. With him in the mix, the Texas defense will get a boost.
While the Longhorns still have many spots to fill, Epps will allow them to be creative. His versatility has been one of his calling cards, and it stood out to many analysts, such as 247Sports National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins.
” Epps is one of nation’s most versatile defensive players,” Biggins wrote. ” … Epps is a jumbo athlete who runs well and plays a physical game. He has a basketball background and his athleticism pops on the hardwood as well. He’s very comfortable playing in space and should be a dominant pass rusher in blitz situations this fall. He’s easily among the most complete defensive players in the region.”
Although the Longhorns will have to wait a bit to see Epps in action, he has the potential to be a special player. With him on the roster, the future is bright, and he should help attract more talent. Now, the focus will be on adding more players to the 2027 class who can help win a national championship.
