Alabama football may not have a 2025 starting quarterback. But the Crimson Tide still seems to have a plan in place.
Ty Simpson, the veteran of the room with 50 career pass attempts across three seasons, has two seasons left of eligibility. Austin Mack has three after reclassifying and joining Washington a season early and following Kalen DeBoer to Alabama. Keelon Russell, the five-star phenom, could have as many as five, albeit unlikely as the highest-rated Alabama quarterback signee since Bryce Young.
Where does the Crimson Tide have room for another quarterback with a path to becoming the starter? It’s a question 2026 New Jersey four-star quarterback Derek Zammit understands, but it’s not a question unique to Alabama.
“Nowadays in college, that’s kind of everywhere,” Zammit told the Tuscaloosa News. “Everywhere you go, you’re going to have to compete for a job, and there’s going to be other guys in line. I’m not one to shy away from a competition. Every quarterback room, you are all working toward the same goal. So it’s friendly competition, but, at the same time, you’re kind of fighting for the job the other guy wants.”
Alabama remains a fierce contender to land Zammit, who has the Crimson Tide in his final four along with Mississippi State, Washington and Syracuse. Zammit will be on campus for Alabama’s A Day spring game April 12, one weekend after an on-campus visit with the Huskies.
While Alabama remained up front about the current state of its quarterback room, it’s not something that keeps them from continuing to recruit its next batch of signal callers.
“I think they feel he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the country,” DePaul Catholic High School football coach Nick Campanile said.
