Antwan Raymond, a Montreal native, joined Rutgers football as a reclassified 2024 recruit after his previous school closed.As a true freshman, Raymond rushed for 457 yards and eight touchdowns, leading all Big Ten true freshmen in rushing yards.Raymond aims to build on his successful first season and improve his consistency and pass protection.With Kyle Monangai entering the NFL Draft, Raymond is expected to take on a larger role in the Rutgers backfield.
PISCATAWAY – Antwan Raymond wasn’t even supposed to be in college last season.
But when the school he was attending last year, Clearwater Academy International in Florida, announced it was closing, Raymond needed to figure out his next step.
Rutgers football opened up that opportunity.
Coach Greg Schiano and running backs coach Damiere Shaw allowed Raymond, a Montreal native, to reclassify and join the program last summer as part of the 2024 recruiting class.
It turned out to be a good move for both sides – Raymond found a home and Rutgers found a productive backup running back.
“It was a rough time for us,” Raymond said Tuesday following the Scarlet Knights’ practice. “But Coach Shaw and Coach Schiano opened the doors for me and my family. Me and my family thought I was ready to be a college athlete and play running back at the Power 5 level. We thought that was a good decision for me. It played out well.”
To say the least. It’s hard to imagine Rutgers’ 7-6 campaign without Raymond, who rushed for 457 yards on 100 carries with eight touchdowns as a true freshman while playing behind 1,000-yard rusher and starter Kyle Monangai.
