Hunters Lane has hired Devlin Culliver as its new football coach.
Culliver replaces William Thomas, who recently resigned as the Hunters Lane coach after four TSSAA football seasons. Thomas went 7-33.
Culliver is an Ohio native with a track record for reviving struggling programs. Hunters Lane has not reached the TSSAA playoffs since 2019.
Culliver previously went 9-20 in three seasons at Youngstown East (Ohio) High School where he was head football coach, assistant athletic director and academic dean. He led the program to its first winning season since 2018 with a 6-4 record last year and was named the 2024 Steel Valley Coach of the Year. It was Youngstown East’s second winning season in 20 years.
“I see coaching as a calling, not just a job,” Culliver said. “Above all, I believe that champions are created— not just in athletics, but in life. I am excited to begin coaching at Hunters Lane and to serve the Goodlettsville and Madison communities.”
Before his stint at Youngstown East, Culliver helped turn around the Elyria (Ohio) football program. He went 15-27 in four seasons and engineered three playoff appearances. He was named the 2021 Lorain Coach of the Year. Elyria was 0-10 the season before Culliver arrived.
“We are delighted to have a coach of Coach Culliver’s caliber join the Hunters Lane team,” Hunters Lane principal Dr. Susan Kessler said. “As an educator, head football coach, and community leader, he’s earned a reputation for building both strong teams and strong character, with the hopes of bringing the same reputable characteristics to the Hunters Lane football program.”
