WEST LAFAYETTE — When Barry Odom was hired as Purdue football coach, he had a two part message for members of the 2024 Boilermaker roster.

First, if they stayed, it would be the most rewarding athletic experience they’ve had.

Second, they’d be given every opportunity to compete for a starting job.

Bennett Meredith believed him.

So while many of his teammates entered the transfer portal, including fellow quarterback Ryan Browne, Meredith set his vision on being Purdue’s starting quarterback in 2025.

“I’m certainly excited Bennett did give us an opportunity,” Odom said after Saturday’s scrimmage inside Mollenkopf Athletic Center.

But, Odom’s staff also brought in three new quarterbacks out of the transfer portal who are competing with Meredith for the starting job.

Through spring, Meredith has looked like the most consistent of the bunch, but Malachi Singleton, EJ Colson and Evans Chuba all probably have more upside. All have rotated getting their chance to run the offense this spring.

Whether Meredith, the lone holdover scholarship quarterback from last season, can earn the starting job remains to be seen.

The Boilermakers will not name a starter this week, Purdue’s last of the spring season.

“Bennett Meredith has done a very good job of competing,” Purdue quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw said last week. “He has shown and caught our eye in making plays.”

It’s not Meredith’s job to evaluate the performances of the quarterback room.

Personally, he’s done what he feels he needs to do to give coaches enough to assess on his value.
