The Ohio State football program has locked in the guy behind the curtain on all the BOOM! memes we get when a recruit gives his verbal pledge to the Buckeyes. Mark Pantoni, General Manager, Player Personnel of the OSU football program, has agreed to a new contract, as first reported by On3.
There aren’t too many in his role better than Pantoni. He has consistently been the guy pulling many of the strings behind the scenes when it comes to the recruiting program at Ohio State. OSU’s classes have consistently ranked inside the top ten and commonly inside the top five according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings during his fourteen years on the banks of the Olentangy. In fact, Ohio State has secured five-straight top five recruiting classes after finishing No. 5 this past cycle.
Pantoni originally came to OSU with the hiring of Urban Meyer back in 2011 after working in a similar capacity at the University of Florida, the same school he graduated from. In his current role in Columbus, Pantoni supervises all aspects of the program’s administrative duties for personnel and recruiting, including high school and transfer portal film evaluations, on-campus official and unofficial visits, and roster construction/management. He had a heavy hand in bringing in guys like Caleb Downs, Seth McLaughlin, and Quinshon Judkins last offseason through transfer portal coordination and efforts.
Details of the contract have yet to be disclosed, but it is anticipated that Pantoni will be one of the highest-paid general managers out there when terms are made available. Currently, the highest paid GM at a university is Mike Lombardi at the University of North Carolina where Bill Belichick is now running the show.
